Protein Fractions of a Scarlatinal Strain of Streptococcus Hemolyticus
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. A tentative method is described for extracting a labile nucleo-protein from scarlatinal Streptococcus hemolyticus. 2. The product differs chemically and serologically from the fractions prepared by subsequent alkaline extraction of the cell residues, and from protein obtained by the classical method for extraction of bacterial "nucleoproteins." 3. The new nucleoprotein is sensitive to very weak alkalies and readily loses nucleic acid under these conditions. The protein degradation products resemble the alkaline-extracted protein fractions of the cell residues. 4. The bearing of the properties of the new nucleoprotein on the chemistry of nucleoproteins in general is discussed, also the possible relation of the fractions obtained to the analysis of streptococcus antigens made by Lancefield.

Studies on the Biology of Streptococcus
1. Hemolytic streptococcus has been found in 100 per cent of the throats of patients with scarlet fever during the 1st week of the disease. 2. The average length of time that these organisms are present in the throat varies from 10 to 20 days. 3. No morphological or cultural characteristics peculiar to the hemolytic streptococcus from scarlet fever can be demonstrated. 4. Ten immune sera have b...
متن کاملStudies on the Biology of Streptococcus
1. Strains of hemolytic streptococci isolated from cases of erysipelas agglutinate in a high percentage of instances with erysipelas immune sera. When agglutination occurs with one serum, the strain usually agglutinates with all other erysipelas sera. 2. Erysipelas immune sera agglutinate strains from erysipelas in a higher percentage of instances than they agglutinate scarlatinal strains. 3. S...
متن کاملThe Production of Streptococcus Hemolyticus Bacteremia in Non-specifically Sensitized Animals
Rabbits sensitized to horse serum developed a bacteremia of 9 to 12 hours' duration when they were inoculated simultaneously with normal horse serum and a strain of Streptococcus hemolyticus, while the bacteria could only be isolated from the blood stream of non-sensitized animals within the first 3 hours after inoculation. On the other hand, when antisera are employed as the antigen for shocki...
متن کاملThe Carbohydrates of Gonococcus and Meningococcus
The alcohol-insoluble polysaccharides of gonococcus and meningococcus were found to contain 4.2 and 3.7 per cent nitrogen respectively, to be protein-free by chemical test, to reduce FehIing-Benedict solution only after hydrolysis. They were non-toxic for rabbits and mice, and failed to engender antibodies (precipitins) in rabbits. They produced no cutaneous reactions in normal, snuffle-free ra...
متن کاملReactions of Monkeys to Experimentally Induced Streptococcus Hemolyticus, Group C, Infection
Macaca mulatta on a normal diet proved to be resistant on intranasal inoculation with Streptococcus hemolyticus, group C. More than half of the monkeys maintained for various periods on a modified dietary regimen deficient in vitamin B became more or less anemic. All developed a granulopenic leucopenia during which many developed spontaneous infections, and all were extremely susceptible on int...
